Discover Morocco's "Little Switzerland," Playful Monkeys & Scenic Mountain Landscapes
Embark on a captivating day trip to the Middle Atlas Mountains, including the renowned Cedar Forest, Azrou, and Ifrane, starting with a convenient pick-up from your accommodation in Fes. This excursion offers a refreshing escape into nature, showcasing some of Morocco's most picturesque mountain towns and unique wildlife encounters.
You will visit the stunning Middle Atlas Mountains and also Ifrane, a charming ski town nestled in the high peaks of Morocco, often referred to as "Little Switzerland" for its European-style architecture and clean, crisp air.
Thereafter, follow the scenic trails through the ancient Cedar Forests to meet the friendly Barbary macaques (monkeys), and have the unique chance to feed them in their natural habitat. In addition to that, you will visit the beautiful Daiet Aoua lake (seasonal presence), a serene spot perfect for birdwatching and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere, and also explore the traditional Berber town of Azrou, known for its artisan crafts.
Finally, after a day filled with natural beauty, charming towns, and memorable wildlife encounters, we will drop you off at your hotel in Fes.
Your Refreshing Escape to Morocco's Mountain Scenery
Your Middle Atlas day trip starts with a pick-up from your accommodation in Fes in the morning.
Then, we drive south, passing through the small town of Immouzer Kandar. We then take a scenic detour to the magnificent Daiet Aoua lake (its water level is seasonal). Here, you can admire the tranquil waters and the surrounding hills, a peaceful spot for birdwatching and enjoying nature.
Thereafter, we continue our journey to visit Ifrane, a unique town famous for its low temperatures, occasional snow, and distinctive alpine-style architecture houses – no wonder it is often called the "Switzerland of Morocco." Take some time to stroll through its clean streets and admire its European feel.
Next, we drive to the town of Azrou and then proceed to visit the nearby Cedar Forest, one of the largest in Morocco. This ancient forest is home to the playful Barbary macaques (monkeys). Feel free to feed them (responsibly, with appropriate food like unsalted nuts or fruit if permitted) while wandering through the majestic cedar trees and enjoying the fresh mountain air. This is a wonderful opportunity for wildlife photography and a unique interaction with these native primates.
You will have free time for lunch (at your leisure) in Ifrane, Azrou, or a suitable spot along the way, where you can enjoy local cuisine.
Finally, after a day filled with stunning scenery, charming towns, and memorable wildlife encounters, we drive back to Fes.
Depending on the time spent at each site, we might have the opportunity to visit additional places or viewpoints along the route. Your driver/guide will ensure a comfortable and enriching experience.
This is a private day trip, meaning the vehicle and driver/guide are exclusively for your party, ensuring a personalized and flexible experience throughout your journey from Fes.
What to Wear: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, especially for exploring the Cedar Forest. The weather in the Middle Atlas can be cooler than in Fes, especially in Ifrane, so bringing layers of clothing, including a light jacket or sweater, is advisable, particularly outside of summer months. Don't forget sunscreen and sunglasses.
Wildlife Interaction: While the Barbary macaques in the Cedar Forest are accustomed to visitors, it's important to interact with them responsibly. Avoid sudden movements and listen to your guide's advice. If you choose to feed them, use appropriate food (like unsalted nuts or fruit, which can sometimes be purchased from local vendors).
Travel Time: The total driving time for this day trip is approximately 3-4 hours round trip from Fes, excluding stops for sightseeing, photos, and lunch. The duration of the trip is typically around 8-9 hours.

Ifrane is approximately 65-70 km (about 1 to 1.5 hours drive) south of Fes. The Cedar Forest near Azrou is a bit further south from Ifrane. Daiet Aoua lake is also in the same general direction. The entire loop for the day trip covers a reasonable distance, allowing for exploration without excessive travel time.
Yes, Ifrane is known for its cold climate and receives snowfall during the winter months (typically from December to February/March). If you visit during this period, you have a good chance of seeing snow, which adds to its "Switzerland of Morocco" charm. Outside of winter, it's admired for its clean air and European-style architecture.
The Cedar Forest (Forêt de Cèdres Gouraud) is one of the largest and most significant cedar forests in Morocco and North Africa. It's home to ancient Atlas cedar trees, some of which are centuries old, creating a majestic and serene atmosphere. Beyond the famous Barbary macaques, it's a beautiful natural area for a peaceful walk and enjoying the fresh mountain air.
Yes, both Ifrane and Azrou offer some shopping opportunities. Ifrane has shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. Azrou is particularly known for its Berber carpets and woodworking crafts. You'll have some free time to browse if you wish, though the focus of the trip is primarily on the natural scenery and towns themselves.
